How the Fudge do you decide WHAT to write?!?!

So for a while- like, forever, Ive always written for the ages between 16-22. Basically upper young adult.
Eventually, the slightly older than that became New Adult. So, Power and the Descendant Trilogy is probably more accurately NA books. Though when I started writing it, and as I continued writing it, I thought it was just older YA. Now, my Empyrean Chronicles is definitely YA.

Earlier this year, my daughter's biological father was in a car crash and died.
She wasn't close to him, as he wasn't the best of guys, or a dad really at all. (In and out of jail her whole life. And he'd been in jail for like 4 years or something already. Had only been out for a few months when he died- and she hadn't seen him)

But despite that... she remembered those two year when he was in her life.
And she understands (she's 10 years old) what it means that he died. That she'll never really know him, never have a relationship with him.

While she has my husband, who has been a great father to her, and they get along and love each other. She will always know, and FEEL, and understand that her father died.

As such, And because she had been asking me for years to write a book she could read (she doesn't read my other books because she doesn't need to be reading in kissing stuff yet!), I decided to start a book for her.

Weird came out of that.

It didn't end up  being the story I originally wanted to tell. Because I didn't want the end to be as devastating... and instead give some hope. So it was a story that touched her. She laughed, she cried. she was totally freaked out in some parts (Life lessons, people. Kids need to be aware of stuff, even if it freaks them out) and she loved it.

And that's ultimately what i wanted.

But now... as the second book of the Empyrean Chronicles was just released, and people are reading the first book, and the third book is up for preorder, and I'm SUPPOSED to be writing the fourth book... all I want to write is a new middle grade book.

I wrote Weird FAST. Like super fast!
(a month!)

Thats the absolute fastest I've ever written a book... EVER.

I did write the majority of the first draft of Enchanted Revenge (Empyrean 1) during a Nano... but it was SO very a rough draft! And I had to revise and edit it for like... a year! And Enticing Violence was about a year too, from first letter to final product.

And that - not instant gratification, but closer to instant than a year- is intriguing. It's exciting! And encouraging.

Plus, I want to write more books Dani (the 10 year old daughter) can read.

Also... I have this nagging story in my head. (well, I ALWAYS have a few stories and characters talking to me. Which is significantly unusual, I understand. And sometimes leads to peculiar behavior. and irritability because I definitely don't have enough time to write all my stories. and sometimes I dont have the energy or mental capacity/strength to write at all, which just leads to more frustration.)

So, like i said, a nagging story in my head, that I really want to write, but have no idea how to. I don't know the story - And people, I am NOT a pantser. I outline- not extensively, but enough that I know the middle, beginning, and end.

So, attempting to write a story out, when I have no idea how it will go, or who the bad guy is, or why the bad guy is a bad guy, or even if the good guy wins...Yeah, I can't do it.

BUT STILL- it nags me.

The issue- I had this problem before.
I was supposed to write The Descendant Trilogy 3 but I had this nagging story about a girl who finds out she's a fairy (haha ) And I decided to write that one, instead of the last Descendant Trilogy Book... and now I still havent written that.

When I first wrote this post I ended it with *I need to write Enthralling Retribution, but I wont yet. Im going to write the MG book.
But I didnt.
I didnt write anything because it was August/September when i first wrote this, and i had absolutely
no time to write ANYTHING. And when Nano started, I forced myself to write SOMETHING, and that something ended up being Enthralling Retribution (Empyrean chronicles 3).

So, I changed up the post some. Because it is all still relevant. I am constantly trying to figure out what to write first... or more accurately, what to write RIGHT NOW.

But I think the deciding factor for me this time, was that I dont want to NOT end the story. and Im afraid if I start a new series (the MG will be a series this time) that I wont finish this one.
And thats just unacceptable.

I'm editing Enthralling Retribution now, and I will write the fourth book next before I start any new series.

Thats not to say that I wont have another book come out before the end of the Empyrean Chronicles 4. It just means I wont WRITE any book before Im done with these 4.

Alright- This was a super long post.
If you read ALL of that, you're awesome!

If you are a writer, tell me, how do you decide WHICH story to write at any given time?

Oblivion by JLA

Title: Oblivion (Lux 1-3 in Daemon's POV)
Author: Jennifer L Armentrout

Experience the epic love story of OBSIDIAN as told by its hero, Daemon Black…

I knew the moment Katy Swartz moved in next door, there was going to be trouble. Lots of it.

And trouble’s the last thing I need, since I’m not exactly from around here. My people arrived on Earth from Lux, a planet thirteen billion light years away. Plus, if there’s one thing I know, it’s that humans can’t be trusted. We scare them. We can do things they only dream about, and honestly, we make them look weak as hell. ‘Cuz they are.

But Kat is getting to me in ways no one else has, and I can't stop myself from wanting her—or wanting to use my powers to protect her. She makes me weak, and I’m the strongest of our kind, tasked with protecting us all. So this one simple girl…she can mean the end for us. Because the Luxen have an even bigger enemy—the Arum, and I need to stay on my game.

Falling for Katy—a human—won't just place her in danger. It could get us all killed, and that’s one thing I’ll never let happen...

Obsidian was the very first book I ever read from JLA.
I have since read all of her books and LOVE them all!
but the Lux series has always had a special place in my heart since it was the first. As soon as I found out about Oblivion, I totally preordered it and have been waiting (Completely impatietly) for Dec 1 to get here so I could read it!

And guys, its so freaking amazing!!!

Yes, if you read the LUX novels, then you already know whats going to happen, but thats ok. Its really better than okay, because now you get to understand why Daemon is the way he is, why he does the things he does. And its just beautiful and amazing.

If she wrote the rest of the books in the series in Daemons POV, id totally devour those, too!

Nano Update

Here's my Nano2015 update
Total word count: 68, 859

This is the first draft of Enthralling Retribution (Empyrean Chronicles 3)
So... YAY!!!

It's strange though, because while I was writing this book, I totally thought it would end up being the longest book I'd written.
And, while it's not the shortest Ive written, it is the shortest of the empyrean Chronicles so far.

Unlike other authors, who write a lot, and then trim the fat.
I write in only the skeleton first, and then add the meat.

So, this book will still probably end up at 76,000-80,000 words.

There you have it.

I've got it up for preorder now on Amazon
Ill revise and edit it probably 3 times, then to the betas, then editing.

Then YOU get to read it.

See you next year my favorite NaNoWriMos!!!!!

Giveaway and Reviews

THREE Review stops on my tour today!

All with Some fantastic reviews.
(excerpts of their reviews below)

Visit them to enter the $10 amazon Giftcard Giveaway!

November 24: Books Are Love
"...the action in the book is one of danger and gives more insight into the world that Alec and Lily are in. It brings you further into the book and has you hoping that Lily and Alec make it through and come out together. A intriguing fascinating book on finding out you aren’t who you seem,, coming to terms with it, going after those who shattered your world only to find a more complex and dangerous situation that leads to finding a purpose for two people who are attracted to each other and have you rooting they come together...."

"...Overall, the characters in Enchanted Revenge were well-written and as well-drawn as the world in which they lived.  What struck me most about them, though, were the small details.  I could completely relate to Lily’s wry humor and her love for books (we happen to have the same taste!), and I loved watching the intricacies of the development of her relationship with Alec..."

November 24: Romorror Fan Girl

"...This book is so much fun to read!!
It's an excellent YA Fantasy book, the Author makes a great job creating Empyrean and the magical creatures, it's really a wonderful world..."

Nano Week 2

So... my word count at the half way mark is...

Not quite the 25,000 that Im supposed to be at, but getting there.
I wrote 3500+ words today, which is phenomenal for a Sunday (the only day my husband is off.)

Also, this weekend was a big and busy one for us.
My daughter turned 10!!! TEN! No more single digits!

So we had a huge sleepover, which rolled into Saturday. The party and sleepover went pretty bad, and the kids had to leave early. My daughter ended up crying the rest of the day. (PS. Girls and kids can be so mean sometime! Ugh.)

Anyways, so we spent a large majority of the weekend trying to make it better for her.
So, the fact that i wrote at all is kind of a miracle.

ALSO- my 4 year old was sick, throwing up, and miserable.

On the bright side, ONE More week until the Thanksgiving Holiday (And a one week vacation, thanks to working for the school district!)

I plan on getting to at least 30,000 by the end of next week.
And I think 20,000 will be doable with a week of no work, even with the holiday being in there.

So, keep your fingers crossed for me.
Teach your kids to be nice.
Keep writing.

And enjoy this weather!!!

Are you doing Nano this year?
How are you doing? You already at 25,000? Past 50,000? Just at 5,000?

Let me know. We can struggle and write together!

NanoWrimo Update 1

For the first week of Nano, I ended up with just over 10k words.

Definitely not as many as I'd liked.
And Im falling behind a lot.

BUT im still gonna push forward and try to bang out another 40k by the end.

I work for a school, so Ill get a week off for Thanksgiving.
Im kinda counting on that time. And maybe its allowing me to slack, knowing that Ill have that week.
BUT I still think I can do it!

How I got the best pair of BOOKISH shoes ever!

So... about two weeks ago, my husband told me that he'd be getting something in the mail and to NOT OPEN IT. Because it would be one of my Christmas presents.

Alright. No problem.

Yesterday, we got that package.

Just a brown envelope with a To: and From: and thats about it.

Chris (the husband) gets home and says, "Just open it babe. I know you know what it is."
He was upset, face turning pink, short with his words. and grumpy.

Kinda like:

(But not really, because he doesnt really get mad. Ever.)

Surprised, I told him I honestly had no idea what it was. How could I? I mean, you could feel something through the bag.
But he was adamant that I already knew what it was.

The From name looked kinda like the last name was Purse, So I went back to trying to figure out what was inside. (Afraid he mightve gotten me a purse. And though you dont know this, because you dont really know me, Ill tell you a secret. I dont like purses. I dont ever use one. I keep the importants in my wallet, that I sometimes carry with me. But thats it.)

Anyways, after telling him multiple times that I honestly had no idea whatsoever what was in it, and him continuing to tell me that he KNEW that i knew what was in it, I gave in, and said FINE.

*Note- right here, I was actually getting super excited about it. Because I really didnt know at all what was in it. And he seemed to think I did, which made me think i SHOULD, but i just couldnt figure it out, and OMG the suspense was getting to me!

So, I grabbed some scissors and tore it open.

Here it is for you.

The glory of my new, most awesome shoes EVER!!!!

How he thought I would know that THESE were in that package...I have no idea.

I mean, I saw a FB post about these a couple months ago! Hadnt even thought about them since then, knowing (haha. as if i couldve known the future. I am no abada) that I would never actually own some!

Anyways... Best husband ever? Yeah, I think so!

PS- I went back and found the post (From Sept!) and here is the link to Annie's Shoes

In case you dont know what's on these shoes, I need you to go check out Jennifer L Armentrout because she is pretty much the coolest author ever. Not only does she write like a superwoman, pumping out SEVERAL books a year, but they are ALL so amazing!

These shoes are referencing her Covenant Series. Which now has a spinoff Titan Series.

Nano 2015

Last year... I wrote a total of like... maybe one word in November.

So sad, I know.

This year, My goal is 80k.
Enthralling Retribution has to get written.

Anyways, are you doing Nano?
And if so, be my writing buddy??

Mailing Lists? ... Really?

So the other day I spent almost 2 hours messing with the html crap.
I Shouldve been writing.
I always shouldve been writing.

Just... every time I read an article about a successful indie author, they always have one thing in common.

Big mailing lists.
That seems super unimportant to me. Like, does anyone actually read emails that get sent out in mass quantities? I know I dont!
But whatever, I guess its a thing.

So I fixed the html on my blog, so that I could add a "Subscribe to my email list" thing.
(Its on the top right!)

My new goal will be to generate more email subscribers,
I guess...
I mean, Im so not gonna do that right now though...

Writing. Thats what I wanna do.
Thats the whole point here, right? To write.

So... Im about 1/4 of the way done with Enthralling Retribution (Empyrean Chronicles 3)
Enticing Violence is out NOW
Go buy it.

PS- go subscribe to my email list. LOL Just since I spent 2 hours working on it.

Subscribe to my mailing list!

Some articles that Ive read that stress email lists...

In the After

In the After (In the After, #1)Title: In the After
Author: Demetria Lunetta

They hear the most silent of footsteps.
They are faster than anything you've ever seen.
And They won't stop chasing you...until you are dead.

Amy is watching TV when it happens, when the world is attacked by Them. These vile creatures are rapidly devouring mankind. Most of the population is overtaken, but Amy manages to escape—and even rescue “Baby,” a toddler left behind in the chaos. Marooned in Amy’s house, the girls do everything they can to survive—and avoid Them at all costs.

After years of hiding, they are miraculously rescued and taken to New Hope, a colony of survivors living in a former government research compound. While at first the colony seems like a dream with plenty of food, safety, and shelter, New Hope slowly reveals that it is far from ideal. And Amy soon realizes that unless things change, she’ll lose Baby—and much more.

Rebellious, courageous, and tender, this unforgettable duo will have you on the edge of your seat as you tear through the pulse-pounding narrow escapes and horrifying twists of fate in this thrilling debut from author Demitria Lunetta.

I started reading this book because my 9 year old daughter wanted to read it.
While, there is no romance (normally a negative for me, haha. Thats a plus for her.) there are a few cuss words, and a couple of situations that may not be appropriate for 9 years olds. (As an example, there is one occurrence, between the main character- 14 at the time- and a much older man who attempts to rape her.)
I havent decided if its appropriate for my daughter yet.

BUT- just as an adult reading this. OR even for teenagers. This was an amazing book.

From the very first page, you dont want to stop reading. the chapters are very short, sometimes only one page, so it makes it very difficult to stop reading. (Just one more chapter becomes a never ending chant)

The relationship built between Amy (the main character) and Baby is beautiful and sweet.
The danger is never ending and grows throughout.

When New Hope comes... things change rapidly, and honestly, every single thing about that society is completely believable. The good and the bad.

There was this boy- Rice. Who seemed to genuinely care about Amy- and while by the end of the book- they are... Hold up. No spoilers.
Umm. No romance. But the possibility of it is there. He is kind of unbelievable. (Super genius to the max.)

Eventhough i did figure out the big twist about half way through the book, it didnt hinder me from wanting to keep reading.

And thankfully, when we picked this book up from the library, we got the second one too.
So please excuse me while i start reading that one.

Teaser 10

      “Well, I want it now.”

His body shook as he laughed. “Right now, right now?”

“Yes. I already know what I want, and where I want it. I’ve known for a while now. But it just…” I tried to figure out what I wanted to say and how I really felt. “It just feels right now. Now is the time.”

I'm writing!!!

It's been a while since I've written anything (well, except for FB and Twitter posts. lol)

August and September are the busiest times of the year for someone like me. Someone who works in a school district.
Outside of my writing life, I'm an IT tech.

Often do I look like this:

I work on computers, laptops, projectors, ipads, etc, etc (the list goes on forever) I do work during the summer, so Im not quite as lucky as the teachers. (But I also don't have the responsibility of taking care of a ton of kids every day)

Anyway, when all the teachers come back, all at once I go from having ZERO workorders, to have a million and two. approximately.

Really, I am responsible for all the tech equipment for 5 schools. FIVE!
Thats a lot of equipment.

So, during the last two months, I've been stressing like no tomorrow.

And when I get home, and manager to somehow find some time to write, I have no motvation to. My creativity has been dulled and damaged by the stress that impairs me. My muse has been captured by my insomnia, and replaced with thoughts of how to work better, harder, faster, and get all my work done.

WELL- I am VERY happy to annouce that Im finally all caught up at work!

The begginning of the school year rush has officially subsided for me.

I still have work - but the stress is gone. (mostly)

And, though you may not be able to tell, by everything I wrote before this sentence, I actually love my job. I love what I do. I love being able to help teachers- who really are shaping our future generations. I love fixing stuff. I love helping.

(not to mention- my daughter goes to one of my 5 schools, so I get to see her way more often than i've ever been able to before)

I love what I do.

And now that Im not stressing with 150 teachers to help every day, all at once, I once again am seeking out my muse.

I call to her, begging her to come back and help me write.
and my creativity? I pulling it forth from the ashes. (not like a zombie. more like a phoenix.) lol

On my best writing day, I wrote almost 10,000 words.
Today, I wrote 1500.

I'm all like...

So...not the best ever.

BUT the day isnt over. And Im just so very happy that Im making myself write again, and that things have finally calmed down enough that I can.

First chapter of Enthralling Retribution (Empyrean Chronicles 3) is now written.
Only about 30-40 more to go. But hey. I can do it.

I really want to have the first draft done by November 2nd, when Enticing Violence (Empyrean 2) comes out.

We'll see.

Im writing!!!!!!
