Review- Stone Cold Touch by JLA

Stone Cold Touch (The Dark Elements, #2)
Title: Stone Cold Tough
(Dark Elements 2)
Author: Jennifer L Armentrout

Every touch has its price

Layla Shaw is trying to pick up the pieces of her shattered life—no easy task for a seventeen-year-old who’s pretty sure things can’t get worse. Her impossibly gorgeous best friend, Zayne, is forever off-limits thanks to the mysterious powers of her soul-stealing kiss. The Warden clan that has always protected her is suddenly keeping dangerous secrets. And she can barely think about Roth, the wickedly hot demon prince who understood her in ways no one else could.

But sometimes rock bottom is only the beginning. Because suddenly Layla’s powers begin to evolve, and she’s offered a tantalizing taste of what has always been forbidden. Then, when she least expects it, Roth returns, bringing news that could change her world forever. She’s finally getting what she always wanted, but with hell literally breaking loose and the body count adding up, the price may be higher than Layla is willing to pay…
I hate love triangles.

Hate that theyre in so many YA novels.

BUT- C’mon. This is JLA we’re talking about. You know its going to be done right!

SO- I, along with every other breathing female out there, was devastated at the end of WHK. Because, why did Roth have to go!?!

BUT- He came back.

So… without giving away spoilers, this is my assessment.

-      Obviously its awesome, because JLA wrote it. And Its just as good as all her other wickedly beautiful books.

-      Yes, Roth is back, BUT for 75% of the book, he is NOT the main guy in her life.

-      At the end of WHK- I honestly didn’t really care about Zayne that much at all… Thought he would always make a good best friend to her, and should end up with Danika… BUT- this book showed us Zayne in a whole new light!!!

-      I still hate love triangles, especially when theyre done well, because then no matter what, someone who deserves her, wont get her. And youre heart will be a little broken.

-      Layla learns stuff about herself, and is more independant. I like it. Stacy and Sam are like the constant awesomeness she needs. In fact, all the side characters (Cayman, Maddox, Abbot, etc- all of them feel so real, even though they are only sideline peeps)

-      The ending… I had KIND of suspected something LIKE that was gonna happen, (due to the million and 3 clues throughout the book) BUT I didn’t expect that! L and its sad. So prepare yourself.

-      The last 25% of the book… maybe the last 15% Was pretty Fing epic. Like, holy crap on a cracker epic. Like- probably the best ever.

-      I still love Roth more. Even though Zayne has so much more history and basis for a strong relationship with Layla, Roth gives so much of himself, its really kind of beautiful.

-      Also- I love that the bad guys aren’t always really bad… and the good guys aren’t really always good. Because really life is not black and white!

-  PS- I hate having to wait so long for her next book!!!And when it comes out, Ill be all like...

So there you have it.

Go buy it. Read it. Love it. And then wait an agonizing amount of time for her next one, with all the rest of us
5 Stars. Obviously

NaNoWriMo 2014 and Beta readers!

Fellow bloggers…
How far I have strayed from my original mission of being a writer… Like an actual writer who earns her living from writing.

For oh so long I have been away (studying IT gibberish) in an attempt to better my life and job. I know, I know, it sucks even worse than it sounds. My muse got bored from lack of attention, and I fear she may have left me.

I will get her back!

Or perhaps, she is peeking in on me now, as my craving for words to be spilled is growing.

What happened? What could have caused her to check in on me?

I blogged…
I mean, not really. I didn’t blog a post, but I went to blogger (for the first time in WAY too long) and checked on the most recent posts.

One caught my attention. A blogger I used to follow (and still technically do, though- as I said, blogging hasn’t been a huge priority for me lately) posted something about betas.

So I ran on over to HER BLOG and quickly devoured that post, and then several more. So much had changed with her since I last read her posts! And she has decided to self-publish! Yay.

Anyhow, we decided to swap our manuscripts for a quick beta- and holy crap it was a fantastic story! Not something I generally read, but she sucked me into this whole new world. (Very Game of Thrones but clean and for a younger audience.)
It was AMAZING and...

And then my muse came out…drifting out of those pages as I read a good book giving me hope and at least an URGE to write again.

Why have I not even READ in so long? No wonder my life is in chaos (or maybe im slightly exaggerating…) At least- mentally Ive been lost.  Always doing things I HAVE to do instead of things I WANT to do...

So… This is what I propose.

I will set up some goals to get me through the end of this year. See below.

  1. Get more betas. SO – if you want me to beta your MS. Let me know (TheresaJonesAuthor at gmail dot com) I’ll beta for you if you beta for me.

  1. Nano!!!!! Write 50,000 words on Book 2 of The Empyrean Chronicles in November. Add me as a buddy on Nanowrimo HERE

  1. Read at least 2 books a month (AT LEAST- aim for 5 a month, but at least 2)

  1. Hopefully start the first draft of Book 3

  1. Decide officially when I will publish Book 1 in The Empyrean Chronicles.

So there you have it people.

Buddy me on Nano

Beta my book and ill beta yours.

Keep your fingers (and toes) crossed that I manage to scrape up a few (a LOT more than a few) thousand words and finish another book.
AND now im PUMPED!!!!!
Lets do this!!

Opposition (Lux 5) Review by JLA

Title: Opposition (Lux 5)

Author: Jennifer L Armentrout

Katy knows the world changed the night the Luxen came. She can’t believe Daemon stood by as his kind threatened to obliterate every last human and hybrid on Earth. But the lines between good and bad have blurred.

Daemon will do anything to save those he loves, even if it means betrayal. But when it quickly becomes impossible to tell friend from foe, and the world is crumbling around them, they may lose everything to ensure the survival of their friends…and mankind.

Can I give a one-word review and just leave it at that?

So, we all know JLA is the best of the best. Every.Single.Book she writes is like glory etched in gold. Romance. Action. Shit-gone-bad and you have to find a way to fix it before the world ends and your lover dies. But you still get to kiss in the middle of it all…

This epic alien saga was summed up nicely. Daemon, Kat, Dee and Archer were present. Dawson and Beth had super minor roles.

Enemy Luxen have invaded and wanna take over the world.
They decide to try and stop them (because really… what else can you do in that situation?)
Bad stuff happens…
There’s some steamy kisses.
More bad stuff happens.
Your heart will break. #sadface
And then the quick- almost anticlimactic ending happens. (was kinda bummed about how quick that went down)
hen more kisses.

 Loved it.

I will say it was weird… because when it ended I thought there would be SO much more. I was reading the paperback, and didn’t realize that Shadows (the prequel novella) was at the end… so I thought there was a good 100 pages left when it ended.

Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi- review

Ignite Me (Shatter Me, #3)

Title: Ignite Me
(Shatter Me #3)
Author Tahereh Mahi

Super brief review:

So guys... I Gotta say.
I was SUPER upset with the second book in the Shatter Me series!

I HATED that she introduced a triangle.
Adam was perfect in book 1!
Book 2 he changed- and Warner (who is a BAD guy) was... not bad anymore? and she cared about him?

Ugh- I was SO upset. SO angry!

BUT-... UGH. Tahereh has the most unique, gorgeous prose! I love it! So I decided to read this and see where it all went.
AND OMG people. I actually love Warner now. and Adam is an asshole!

And maybe it helped bec It had been a year since I fell in love with Adam and Juliettes romance. I don't know.
But I really liked the way this ended.  A lot!

Perfect Kind of Trouble by Chelsea Fine

Perfect Kind of Trouble (Finding Fate, #2)

Title: Perfect Kind of Trouble
Author: Chelsea Fine

Sometimes when perfect falls apart, a little trouble fixes everything . . .

Twenty-one-year-old Kayla Turner has lost everything. After spending most of her life taking care of her ailing mother, she just wants to spot a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. So when her late father-a man she barely knew-leaves her an inheritance, she finally breathes a sigh of relief . . . until she learns the inheritance comes with strings. Strings in the form of handsome playboy Daren Ackwood, her father's protégé. To see any of her inheritance, she's forced to team up with him. From his expensive car to those sexy dimples, Kayla's seen his type before. But Daren isn't who he seems to be . . .

Struggling to make amends for his family's mistakes, Daren has a life more Oliver Twist than Richie Rich these days. He's beyond grateful that James Turner included him in his will, but working with Turner's princess of a daughter to fulfill his cryptic last wish is making Daren wonder if being broke is really so bad. Still, she's just as beautiful as she is stubborn, and the more time he spends with Kayla, the less it feels right being without her. Soon Daren and Kayla begin to wonder if maybe the best gift Kayla's dad could have left them . . . was each other.

I have to say… I love Chealsea Fine.  Love her writing! I love her books! I love her!

So far, I have read every single one of her books and thoroughly enjoyed them all. I freaking devour her books like theyre decadent chocolate cakes with hot fudge on top.

BUT this one… not so much. I don’t know why. I skimmed over probably 1/3 of this book. I didn’t really get hooked until about half way through. I still enjoyed it. The characters were good. And I loved learning more about Darren (since he was in Best kind of Broken)

Maybe my expectations were too high, because her other books were just SO GOOD.

But there was something about this whole story that just took forever for me to actually like.

When I finished it… I thought, “That’s it?” and felt so let down. Though… now its been a week since I read it and Ive come to realize it WAS in fact a good book. Great story and everything.

Review of Branded by A Ketner and M Kaicicki

Title: Branded
Author: Abi Ketner and Missy Kalicicki

Fifty years ago The Commander came into power and murdered all who opposed him. In his warped mind, the seven deadly sins were the downfall of society.

To punish the guilty, he created the Hole, a place where sinners are branded according to their sins. Sinners are forced to live a less than human existence in deplorable conditions, under the watchful eye of guards who are ready to kill anyone who steps out of line.

Now, LUST wraps around my neck like thick, blue fingers, threatening to choke the life out of me. I’ve been accused of a crime I didn’t commit, and the Hole is my new home.

Constant darkness.

Brutal and savage violence.

Excruciating pain.

Every day is a fight for survival.

But I won’t let them win. I will not die in the Hole.

I am more than my brand. I’m a fighter. My name is Lexi Hamilton, and this is my story.

I have to say, I am thoroughly surprised by what a fantastic find this book is. The last several books ive gotten for review from Netgalley have totally let me down. Haha

So… as the summary states, the basis of this story revolves around a girl who is branded as a sinner. In this future world, there is a Commander- the big bad- who enforces the rules of the new US. Basically if ANYONE just accuses you of sinning, you are literally branded a sinner and sent to the hole.

So… despite my belief that something like this would never happen and it is totally unbelievable, as our society as a whole likes to “sin” too much to ever try to actually outlaw it, the story was pretty cool. It was a good idea for a dystopian settings.

Our characters were all very believable and deep. I really like Lexi and her improvement as a person. She really grows a lot, from scared, sad, so-desperate-she-is-ready-to-kill-herself Lexi to a strong, independent, ready-to-make-her-own-choices Lexi.
I will say, sometimes she was kinda annoying, and her choices were kinda annoying… but overall, I really like her.
Cole… at the beginning, I thought he was dumb. Not actually stupid. But as a character, very lame… in that he was another-mostly abusive- male lead. Thankfully, all that changed and I grew to REALLY like him!!! Swoon.
Even minor characters were pretty great!

But what was really great about this book were some specific scenes/relationships. The build up of the Cole/Lexi romance. It really built well. It wasn’t rushed- no insta love. NO triangle! YAY. They learned about each other. Helped eachother. Argued. Grew closer. It was FANTASTIC!!
The Alyssa/Lexi relationship. Gold, people! It was brilliantly written and executed!
Even the negative relationship of Lexi and her stepfather! The dynamic, perverse, gruesome, sadness of it all was SO well done.

There were about 3 or 4 wtf moments though… not in a good way. Some dialogue and scenes were pretty poorly done in this sense that it felt like it was written by an entirely different person (perhaps… one of the authors? Im not sure) I don’t wanna get too spoiler… BUT I wanna give an example. SO… don’t read this if you don’t want the spoiler.

So… like when Keegan and Cole start arguing about whether Lexi can fight or not. The entire thing was… semi believable in that men think they know everything and can control everything. BUT when Keegan makes him leave. Im left wondering WHY?! Why was everyone ok with it? Why did keegan keep saying that he was not to be trusted, and just wait and see… hes bad? Why did Lexi just go along with it if she loves him so much?!
*End spoiler*

Anyways… overall a great read that sucks you in and entertains despite its misgivings!

How to dye your hair two tones, red on top and black underneath.

So… at one point recent I decided I needed to make SOME kind of change. I needed to do SOMETHING, but I didn’t know what.
And I knew that I wanted to something semi-big.
As a mother of 2 pretty babies, married and living a very 9-5 life, there wasn’t much I could do.

I dyed my hair! BRIGHT RED! It felt empowering! Strong. Awesome.

In case you wanna do it too…
Here is how:

Step 1: Buy your products.
-You’ll need Red hair dye for the top. I used Loreal Excellence hiColor Hilights in RED because it would lift the darker color (kind of like bleaching my hair) AND dye it red at the same time. Developer 30. (in the picture, i have the wrong developer next to each hair dye...)
-Instead of going BLACK on bottom, I decided to go for a SUPER dark brown. Clairol 3RV/68R Violet Brown...
-You need GLOVES (don’t forget these or your hands will get dyed and it will last a LONG time)
-a bowl to mix everything in.
-and scrunchies/something to separate your air and keep it separated.
(the lip gloss was for my 8 year old daughter... I guess she threw it in there for the picture)

Step 2: mix the red dye and apply to the top half of your hair.
I did do both colors at the same time… and since my hair is naturally dark, I chose to do the red first so it would be in longer.

*Notice the stains ALL over my shirt. Wear something you dont care about.

Step 3: mix the second dye and put to bottom half of hair.
I parted my hair a little higher up then right above my ears. But generally you part it from ear to ear.

Step 4: WAIT… this was the part that didnt work too well for me. I had to go get my son and didnt plan the times right. (takes a lot longer to mix everything up and put it on than i thought it would. So plan for 2 hours at least. SOOOO- I didnt get to leave the dye on as long as i was supposed to...)

Step 5: wash out.

This was immediately after. I wasnt impressed at first. Wasnt as bright as i wanted it...

But then it dried...

YAY!!! PRETTY hair!

Is was redder than the pictures look. the ones below are the best i could get that actually shows the color.

Go HERE to see how I bleached my hair without damaging it.

BTW- if you STILL haven’t bought ANY of my books, Shame on you. You should. Right now. :)
