Review: Pure by Jennifer L Armentrout

Pure (Covenant, #2)

Title: Pure
(Covenant #2)
Author: Jennifer L Armentrout

Summary:
There is need. And then there is Fate
Being destined to become some kind of supernatural electrical outlet isn't exactly awesome--especially when Alexandria's "other half" is everywhere she goes. Seth's in her training room, outside her classes, and keeps showing up in her bedroom--so not cool. Their connection does have some benefits, like staving off her nightmares of the tragic showdown with her mother, but it has no effect on what Alex feels for the forbidden, pure-blooded Aiden. Or what he will do--and sacrifice--for her.

When daimons infiltrate the Covenants and attack students, the gods send furies--lesser gods determined to eradicate any threat to the Covenants and to the gods, and that includes the Apollyon and Alex. And if that and hordes of aether-sucking monsters didn't blow bad enough, a mysterious threat seems willing to do anything to neutralize Seth, even if that means forcing Alex into servitude or killing her.
When the gods are involved, some decisions can never, ever be undone.

Review:
Pure starts immediately after the end of Half-Blood. You continue to follow Alex, as she tries to deal with all the things that happened in the first book.  She still cares deeply for aiden, but it is still forbidden. She and Seth begin to grow closer, while the Council is trying to turn her into a servant (because of the risk she poses) The daimens are getting closer to trying to attack. And to top it all off, the gods sent Furies (as statues) to each Covenant school in case the Council cannot control the Daimon problem.
The book is non-stop action and adventure.

The main plot in this one is preparing Alex to have her testimony in front of the Council. But their main goal is not to actually hear her testimony, bt rather put her away bec they fear her. She and Seth grow a lot closer in this book, as her training is now split between Aiden and Seth.

I normally don’t like triangles at all. But I feel that they are bound to happen in most books these days. I don’t dislike Seth. I mean, he is arrogant and rude most of the time, but he is really there for alex when a lot of bad things happen to her. (namely one HUGE thing where something really bad happens to one person. I wont tell you though, bec I don’t wanna spoil it.) but he is there for her. And you can tell he starts to really care for her.

Review: Half-Blood by Jennifer L Armentrout

Half-Blood (Covenant, #1)

Title: Half-Blood
(Covenent #1)
Author: Jennifer L Armentrout

Summary:
The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi-pure-bloods-have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

Review:
Yes… I know, can you believe I am just NOW reading these books? Its sad that ive waited so long. But man, it was so good!

So, the story is about Alex, a 17 year old half blood (meaning her mother is a Pure blood and her father was a mortal) who after three year in hiding with her mother (from the Council, gurads, sentinals, etc) is on her way back to the Covenant. Her mother dies immediately before this book starts, and she has to deal with that the entire book.

Alex is a strong (most of the time) brave and reckless girl, who is a little uncontrollable but truly passionate person who only wants to do the right thing.

She begins training with a Pure blood, Aiden, in an attempt to be allowed to stay at The Covenant (a school for halfs and pures) so that she can one day become a Sentinal (a warrior whose main job is to kill Daimens (a Pure who became addicted to Aether-the god-like energy in them- so much so that they continuously kill to suck the aether from pures and half-blood)

The story has so much detail in it. The entire world felt so real as I read it. Armentrout went into so much detail to create the hierarchy system and rules they all have to follow.
Then of course you have the romance- the forbidden yet beautiful romance between Aiden and Alex (halfs and bloods are not allowed to be together on penalty of death) Aiden was pretty amazing in every way. Yeah, he had a few down sides, but overall he was pretty perfect.

Review: The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden

The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden
Title: The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden
Author: Jessica Sorensen

Summary:
There are those who don’t get luck handed to them on a shiny platter, who end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, who don’t get saved.
Luck was not on Callie’s side the day of her twelfth birthday when everything was stolen from her. After it’s all over, she locks up her feelings and vows never to tell anyone what happened. Six years later her painful past consumes her life and most days it’s a struggle just to breathe.
For as long as Kayden can remember, suffering in silence was the only way to survive life. As long as he did what he was told, everything was okay. One night, after making a terrible mistake, it seems like his life might be over. Luck was on his side, though, when Callie coincidentally is in the right place at the right time and saves him.
Now he can’t stop thinking about the girl he saw at school, but never really knew. When he ends up at the same college as Callie, he does everything he can to try to get to know her. But Callie is reserved and closed off. The more he tries to be part of her life, the more he realizes Callie might need to be saved.

Review:
So, I want to start out by saying that Ive read a lot of Jessica Soresens books, but most recently I read the Secret of Ella and Micha, which I was not overly impressed with. I suppose my expectations were just too high bec of how much I liked her other books. So I held off on this one for a while.

Until a wonderful bloggy friend told me that I should SO read this, and MAN am I glad I did!

The story is about 2 people (with 2 other supporting people) Callie is a broken girl. She has been broken since she was only 12, when someone took advantage of her in the worst way imaginable. This is not something I take lightly or read about often, especially when she was so young when it happened. Rape is an inexcusable crime! But since that day in Sixth grade, Callie had been different. She was anti-social, feared any person of the opposite sex, and tried to make herself appear heavier and uglier than she was because she wanted no attention on herself.

This attitude stayed with her even when she finally got out of that town and went to college. Except, she was trying hard to get over it. To heal herself. And to be stronger. In this book, you get to witness a lot of growing on her part.

Then you have Kayden who is also broken. He has been verbally, emotionally and physically abused his whole life. His father is a drunk, but he would best him even when he was sober. And things only got worse for Kayden when his two older brother grew up and moved out, leaving him alone to bear the wrath of his father.

When he went to college, he was basically dead. He didn’t feel anything anymore because it was easier to turn all his feelings off. (His mother was also nonexistent, as she drowned her sorrows in pharmaceuticals and wine-offering him no safety from his father)

Review: Beta (annex #1)

Beta (Annex, #1)

Title: Beta (Annex #1)
Author: Rachel Cohn

Summary:
Elysia is created in a laboratory, born as a sixteen-year-old girl, an empty vessel with no life experience to draw from. She is a Beta, an experimental model of a teenage clone. She was replicated from another teenage girl, who had to die in order for Elysia to exist.
Elysia's purpose is to serve the inhabitants of Demesne, an island paradise for the wealthiest people on earth. Everything about Demesne is bioengineered for perfection. Even the air induces a strange, euphoric high, which only the island's workers--soulless clones like Elysia--are immune to.

At first, Elysia's life is idyllic and pampered. But she soon sees that Demesne's human residents, who should want for nothing, yearn. But for what, exactly? She also comes to realize that beneath the island's flawless exterior, there is an under-current of discontent among Demesne's worker clones. She knows she is soulless and cannot feel and should not care--so why are overpowering sensations cloud-ing Elysia's mind?

If anyone discovers that Elysia isn't the unfeeling clone she must pretend to be, she will suffer a fate too terrible to imagine. When her one chance at happi-ness is ripped away with breathtaking cruelty, emotions she's always had but never understood are unleashed. As rage, terror, and desire threaten to overwhelm her, Elysia must find the will to survive.

Review:
So, I’m not really sure where Ill go with this review, since Im not actually sure how I feel about the book.

Ill just start with the basics. The plot was different and unique. I loved the idea of clones (since realistically I feel they will be in our near future)I liked the idea of the rich elite living on a hidden and exclusive paradise island! I didn’t like the lack of information about the Water Wars, but its ok. We got only the most basic information about what made the world what it was.

Characters: Elsia was our main character. She did go through some serious character growth. She started just a robot, basically. She didn’t care, or feel or think. Until she did. And then she realized she was a defect – a clone that has feelings and emotions and doesn’t want to be a slave. By the end of the book, her character has done a 180! Her character was very well written.

Mother, the Governor and their 2 kids were pretty thought out characters, but all were horrible in their own ways, whether they were spoiled brats, disgusting perverts, or just felt entitled to everything. I could say more, but wont spoil it.

Review: Darkness Breaks

Darkness Breaks (Darkness Falls, #2)

Title: Darkness Breaks (Darkness Falls #2)
Author: Jessica Sorensen

Summary:
Kayla made her choice and now she has to live with it. She stays with the Day Takers, hiding in the city, staking vampires. But fighting vampires as a human is difficult.
Sylas constantly pressures Kayla to choose the life of a Day Taker. But until Kayla knows what Monarch is planning, she can’t make her choice. Plus there’s Aiden. No matter how hard she tries, she can’t stop thinking about him.
As Kayla’s memories resurface, the pieces of her history unfold. She learns of Cell 7, a place that Kayla believes holds the answers to the creation of the virus. But getting to Cell 7 is a dangerous mission. And with Kayla's strength weakening, it's one mission she might not make it through alive.

Review:
So, this book starts immediately where book one stops. Again, the same people are present. We have Sylas, the bad boy with a hidden good heart. Aiden, the liar who swears he lies to protect her and because he loves her. Monarch, the twisted doctor who has created them to save the world, even though he is the one who destroyed it. And of course Kayla, the main character, the protagonist. The twisted confused girl, with hidden memories. The one created to save them all.

The book was contact non stop action. One secret revealed after another. (yet still SO many unanswered questions)
