Review: Half-Blood by Jennifer L Armentrout

Half-Blood (Covenant, #1)

Title: Half-Blood
(Covenent #1)
Author: Jennifer L Armentrout

Summary:
The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi-pure-bloods-have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

Review:
Yes… I know, can you believe I am just NOW reading these books? Its sad that ive waited so long. But man, it was so good!

So, the story is about Alex, a 17 year old half blood (meaning her mother is a Pure blood and her father was a mortal) who after three year in hiding with her mother (from the Council, gurads, sentinals, etc) is on her way back to the Covenant. Her mother dies immediately before this book starts, and she has to deal with that the entire book.

Alex is a strong (most of the time) brave and reckless girl, who is a little uncontrollable but truly passionate person who only wants to do the right thing.

She begins training with a Pure blood, Aiden, in an attempt to be allowed to stay at The Covenant (a school for halfs and pures) so that she can one day become a Sentinal (a warrior whose main job is to kill Daimens (a Pure who became addicted to Aether-the god-like energy in them- so much so that they continuously kill to suck the aether from pures and half-blood)

The story has so much detail in it. The entire world felt so real as I read it. Armentrout went into so much detail to create the hierarchy system and rules they all have to follow.
Then of course you have the romance- the forbidden yet beautiful romance between Aiden and Alex (halfs and bloods are not allowed to be together on penalty of death) Aiden was pretty amazing in every way. Yeah, he had a few down sides, but overall he was pretty perfect.

You also have Caleb, the best friend, who remains only a best friend (which I liked. I hate it when the best friend starts being more than a best friend and you develop a nasty triangle) He was a pretty awesome character too.

And the Seth… the Apollyon (the only half-blood –once every generation- that is able to affect the elements like the Pures and is the most powerful being on the world) He was kinda… weird at first. I didn’t really know whether to like, him, hate him, or just ignore him.
But I foresee a love triangle between him, Aiden and Alex. I don’t know, but we’ll see.

Overall, this was an exciting book, filled with anger, love, passion, adventure, and action that left you wanting more! (plus… NO KILLER CLIFFHANGER!! Probably the ONLY Armentrout book without a killer cliffhanger!!)

  1. Great review, lovely!
I adore this series, probably more than Lux, which is really saying something! But I think Jen broke me with Deity(it was still great, don't get me wrong) I won't spoil it for you but I have to say I haven't picked up another Armentrout book since, and she's my fave author!
Anywhoo, I hope you continue on with this series, it really is great!
    Happy Reading! =D

  2. GREAT review! I actually only read this one late last year myself so don't feel too bad :) Oh and I loved it just as much as you did ♥ I can't wait to start Pure & JLA's Lux series! Thanks for sharing!

  3. This is a great review. I see all these books about witches, angels, demons, vampires, and werewolves and I'm kind of tired. Among so many I don't know which one to choose. And even with great reviews from people i trust, like you, I just think the market is saturated. Now there's this new movie 'Beautiful Creatures'... I don't know. I think the YA genre needs something new. Still, I can't deny I'm a sucker for a good story, so I might try this one.

    Thanks for sharing!
