Review: Darkness Falls by Jessica Sorensen

Darkness Falls (Darkness Falls, #1)

Title: Darkness Falls (Darkness Falls #1)
Author: Jessica Sorensen

Summary:
When the disease spread through the world, people had no choice but to go into hiding. The Colony is hidden deep underground, far away from the vampires—humans that were transformed by the disease. The vampires are hideous, starving, and they will kill any human they come across.
Seventeen-year-old Kayla is a Bellator, a warrior that protects The Colony. In order to survive, there are three rules she must follow:
Rule #1—Never go out after dark.
Rule #2—Always carry a weapon.
Rule #3—No matter what, never EVER get bitten.
But what happens when the rules Kayla has always lived by can no longer apply?
The Highers run The Colony and accept nothing less than perfection. One slip up can mean death. Kayla has always worked hard to follow the rules and strive for perfection. But during a moment of weakness, she lets her imperfections show. Her punishment is worse than death. She is chosen for The Gathering and is thrown out into a world full of starving vampires.
No one has ever survived The Gathering, at least that’s what Kayla’s been told. But when she runs into a group who insist they were once part of The Gathering, Kayla discovers the Highers have been keeping secrets. Secrets that could lead to a cure.

Review:
Man! Why has it taken me so long to read this?? I read the Fallen Star series by Sorensen like… a year ago, and bought this book and the second book probably 3 months ago, but only started reading it today?? BAD decision! I should have read it months ago!!

Some things I love in my books: action, romance, paranormal aspect, dystopian aspect, great characters, suspense… this book has it ALL! It was amazing!

So, the story is about a girl, Kayla, who lives in the future, where everything has changed. There are basically 3 kinds of vampires that were created due to a virus alive,  and then the few humans that are left. The humans live in The Colony, where the Highers (a form of vampire, just not the blood thirsty kind) are in charge and rule every single thing of your life. On the outside are the bad vampires, that are blood thirsty, and crazy and kinda like zombies. And then, there are the half breeds, that are a form of vampire, but not crazy zombiefied, still strong and dead though.

And so Kayla gets thrown out for dead in this thing called the Gathering (which I still don’t fully understand) and she runs into the other humans. But see, the Highers and the Doctors in the Colony have WAY too many secrets and it felt like you learned a new secret on every freakin page. So many twists and turns, and still there is so much to learn.

Review: H2O The Novel

H2O the Novel

Title: H2o The Novel
Authors: Austin Boyd and
Brannon Hollingsworth

Summary:

H2O is a contemporary crossover women’s novel that tells the story of Kate Pepper, a successful young business woman in Seattle whose life is suddenly—and strangely—turned upside down. Unexplainable visions torment her every time she gets wet. Sinking into despair, frantic to avoid water at any cost, Kate ultimately finds romance and redemption through the advice of simple people who love her for who she is, not what she was.
Kate Pepper has it all . . . a razor-sharp intellect, perfect health, stunning beauty, a wildly successful career, and all the money she can spend. Or rather, she thinks she has it all.
Despite the perfect shell, there’s something dark inside Kate. Terrible visions send her into a deep depression and her world crumbles. All her business savvy and elite connections don’t make a difference; she has lost control.
Who will save her? Xavier, her predatory boyfriend? Or Candice, the Down syndrome waitress at her favorite coffee shop? At the bottom of her dark well, desperate to get out of the water, there’s nowhere to reach but up.
H2O—a fascinating allegorical look at success, sanity and spiritual redemption in a young woman’s relationship with water.

Review:
Im not really exactly sure where to go with this review. See, when I requested this book from Netgalley, It was because I thought it was going to be a paranormal/fantasy romance novel. (which is what I generally prefer to read) however, that is not the case.

The story is about a flawed, damaged woman, Kate Pepper, who on the outside appears to be strong and successful. She had a past she didn’t care for, and a dark secret that too many women can relate to. At the beginning of the story, she has a great job, making good money, an abusive(verbally and emotionally, not physically) boyfriend who is way below her and an all-around scumbag douche.

But then, out of nowhere, when she touches any water (even tears, fog, or sweat) she passes out and has these crazy visions. (hence why I thought this would be a paranormal novel… about visions) She kinda goes crazy, in that she decides to stop touching water at all. No bathing, no washing, no drinking any water at all. She even has medical issues arise (kidney issues) due to lack of water. And this part of the novel was written very well and believably.
And while she is hermitizing herself, she begins to chat online with a person who is offering to help her. A couple months down the road, this someone turns up to fix her toilet (which is having issues bec she refuses to touch the water to wash her hands, so she uses a ton of toilet paper)

Review: Indomitable by J Meyers

Indomitable (an Intangible novella)

Title: Indomitable
Author: J.Meyers

Summary:
Perhaps the most dangerous person to gain unimaginable power is the one who feels oppressed.

And full of wrath. For very good reason.

Review:
So… Indomitable is a prequel to Intangible told in Jonas’s POV. In case you haven’t read Intangible, I wont have any spoilers, but it is about twins, a brother and sister, who are prophesied to either destroy the Realm (where the supernatural live) or save it. Because of this, many want to kill them, and some want to protect them.
Jonas is a vampire who was originally meant to kill them when they were born. But he didn’t want to kill innocent babies, and didn’t. Instead another vampire was said to have killed them.
This is a short story, that tells some background into who Jonas is, and what makes him who he is. The things he went through in his human life (being a black man, he was a slave and had to watch some horrible things happen) and about how he went all vengeful after he was turned.
Jonas was one of my fav characters from Intangible, so this was a great treat for me.
It was too short for me, a little teaser, and I really wanted more.
But the writing was superb (even though it was an unedited ARC) and I enjoyed learning more about Jonas.
See my reviews for Intangible and Intuition (another prequel short story).

Rating: 4 Stars

Review: Archers of Avalon #3

Avow (The Archers of Avalon, #3)

Title: Avow
(Archers of Avalon #3)
Author: Chelsea Fine

Summary:
Scarlet remembers. Everything. Her past lives, Tristan, Gabriel, Nate: she remembers it all--including how to get to the Fountain of Youth. But time is running out.

Heather and Gabriel have been kidnapped by Raven, while the curse that has plagued Scarlet and Tristan for centuries has shifted, putting the star-crossed lovers in more danger than ever before. Water from the Fountain of Youth is the only thing that can save Scarlet and her loved ones. But the water comes at a price.

With lives--and hearts--at stake, Scarlet leads her friends on a dangerous journey to the Fountain of Youth. Where eternal life is possible, but death is certain

Review:
Wow! I don’t even know where to start with this review. Certain words come to mind… Epic. Amazing. Awe-inspiring. Love. Real, true love. But… it doesn’t appear I can form coherent sentences! But, ill try.

Avow starts immediately after Awry ends. Scarlet remembers everything. Her and Tristan are madly in love. Nate is still Nate. And Gabe and Heather are kidnapped by the evil craziness called Raven. They are in dire need of the Fountain water, or else they all die.

A large portion of this book is in the past. In Awry, you got to see a glimpse into Gabe, Tristans and Scars past, but this time you delve even deeper. You follow Scarlet through each of her past lives, learning as she learned and grew into the person she is now!

Self-Pubbing is harder than it looks!

So, I feel the urge to update things once again.

You may think that once you write a book, then the hard work is done. But you would be sorely incorrect. Yes, writing a book is hard. It takes a lot of hard work, patience and dedication, but really, that’s the easy part.

That’s just telling a story.
The hard parts come later, after you have written it.

See, this is what happened to me. I finished writing my book in Jan 2012. YES- almost ONE FULL year ago. Then I edited it. Then revised and edited again. Then sent it to a pretty freakin awesome beta reader, and revised and edited again. Then I had to take a step back from it, and started writing the sequel.

Then I went back and edited it again.

Then I decided it was ready, had photos taken for the cover by an amazing photographer (shout out to Digitally Different Photography) and the cover was made. Then I thought, 10 months later and now its ready.

(somewhere in there I queried agents 3 different times, after 3 different drafts, with no luck.)

So, then I decided I wanted to have a book tour ready for the release. BUT- at the last minute, I was afraid. I experienced this heart wrenching, holy-crap-what-am-I-doing fear after I started sending out my book to reviewers.

I thought of this one author (in case you don’t know what I’m talking about, read this post) where I participated in a book tour and read her book and could NOT believe she thought it was ready to publish. It felt like a first draft. No climax, SO many grammatical errors. So many things wrong.

And I thought- oh no, that’s gonna be me!! And I finally convinced my husband that an actual editor was necessary.

BUT- I had already sent out ARCs to several bloggers. Then I had to retract it all, and explain that I’m moving the book tour to FEB instead of Jan, so that I will have time to really make it ready. (the editor will be done the first week of Jan)

So… there you have it.  And I still haven’t even published yet!
On the upside, it will be more polished when YOU read it (because you will, right?) it will just be one month later.

Sorry for the confusion everyone!! So now POWER release: Feb 2013

AND- still email me (theresamcrocker@gmail.com) to sign up for the book tour. I have about 13 bloggers signed up already.

Also- another upside. Today I wrote 5500 more words in HOPE, The Descendant Trilogy #2!!

Review: Minder by J. Kabay

Minder

Title: Minder
Author: J. Kabay

Summary:
Oh, Parents. If you knew what was inside that security blanket, you'd never throw it away. Childhood is governed from a sacred place within the trees, lit by fireflies, and overseen by ancient souls devoted to the sanctity of youth. Some kids are lucky enough to visit this place, but mortal danger arises for Sophia, who arrives uninvited. Readers are carried through a whimsical, often nail-biting adventure as brother and sister confront every parent's worst nightmare. Dragons and fairies are alive and well in this old-world tale, where scary things happen to children who ignore their Minders.
P.S. Childhood ends at 30. And this book proves it.

Review:
So, I want to start out by saying that I know this author personally, and as Ive mentioned before, im always wary to read (or see, or hear)something that someone I know has created because of two things. First, what if you don't like it? What if when you read it, its just not that good? How do you say that to someone you know? And second, your expectations are a certain way, and what if it fails to meet your expectations only because you know this person...

Well, I have to say that this was an amazing tale of epic proportions, that did not disappoint! I am so glad that I decided to buy and read this book! And really, Im honored to know the author!

Review: The Crimson Hunt

The Crimson Hunt by Victoria H. Smith
Title: The Crimson Hunt
Author: Victoria Smith

Summary:
College junior Ariel Richmond is working on year three of Project Normalcy.

Her house reeks of keggers past and her bestie is just a slight bit vulgar. But the thing is—they both aid in making life refreshingly uneventful.

So much for hard-earned mediocrity when Luca Grinaldi appears on the scene.

Luca’s sudden presence on campus is hard to ignore. Those bright eyes act like a beacon to unsuspecting females, and with features like his, he’s got to be moonlighting for GQ. Luca hopelessly captivates Ariel with his confidence and charisma, but the mysteries surrounding him make him nearly untouchable. And just when Ariel grows close enough to unlock his secrets, a tragic event sends her life in a downward spiral.

That steady life is no longer an option and allies quickly become scarce. The mysterious Luca seems to be the only one willing to help her—but with that trust comes the burden of his secrets. He has a dark mission of otherworldly proportions, and is willing to sacrifice as many lives as it takes to see it completed.

Gone are the days of simply maintaining normalcy, and if Ariel isn’t cautious with her trust, so soon may be her future.

The Crimson Hunt is a New Adult Science Fiction Romance

Review:
So, I didn’t know exactly what to expect when I started reading this book. I mean, you never know just what you will get when you pick up a debut of a self-published author, but I was really pleasantly surprised.

Review: Opal (a Lux Novel)

Opal (Lux, #3)

Title: Opal (lux #3)
Author: Jennifer L Armentrout

Summary:
When he set out to prove his feelings for me, he wasn’t fooling around. Doubting him isn’t something I’ll do again, and now that we’ve made it through the rough patches, well... There’s a lot of spontaneous combustion going on.

But even he can’t protect his family from the danger of trying to free those they love.

After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different... And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable of. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.

Together we’re stronger... and they know it

Review:
(spoilers for the first 2 books!)

Holy cow!! So… This book was AMAZING, of course! But Im gonna warn you right now, like all of her books, there is a KILLER cliffhanger at the end!

So, the story follows Katy, Daemon, and the crew as they figure out what to do now that Dawson is back. He isn’t the same though, and all he wants to do is find Beth.  BUT they have to trust someone who is totally untrustworthy in order to even try to do anything.

Allison Stevens is a 21 year old single mother who gets thrown into the middle of this battle when Damien, the Leader of the Rising, decides to hunt her down and kill her because he fears she is the descendant prophesied to save the world.

David, a member of the Order, takes Allison under his wing in order to show her the ropes, and hopefully groom her into being the one they have been waiting for. The only problem is that they start to grow more attached than a teacher/student relationship should allow.

But that isn’t all. Damien wants to open the Seven Seals and bring about the apocalypse and it’s up to Allison to not only save herself and her family, but save the world, all while trying to keep her heart from breaking.

Review: Pushing The Limits

Pushing the Limits (Pushing the Limits, #1)

Title: Pushing the Limits
Author: Katie McGarry

Summary:
No one knows what happened the night Echo Emerson went from popular girl with jock boyfriend to gossiped-about outsider with "freaky" scars on her arms. Even Echo can't remember the whole truth of that horrible night. All she knows is that she wants everything to go back to normal. But when Noah Hutchins, the smoking-hot, girl-using loner in the black leather jacket, explodes into her life with his tough attitude and surprising understanding, Echo's world shifts in ways she could never have imagined. They should have nothing in common. And with the secrets they both keep, being together is pretty much impossible.

Yet the crazy attraction between them refuses to go away. And Echo has to ask herself just how far they can push the limits and what she'll risk for the one guy who might teach her how to love again.

Review:
So, FINALLY I read this book! And FINALLY I know what all the hype is about!
HOLY FREAKIN COW, people! It was such a good book.

The story is about 2 seniors in high school, both with some serious baggage. Echo went from miss popular who has it all, to the freak who went missing and doesn’t remember where she was or what happened, only that she woke up with scars all over her arms. Really all she wants to do is get back to normal, and remember what happened to her the day she got the scars.

Noah is a stoner, bad boy on the surface, but underneath he is a boy who lost his parents to a fire and is being shuffled around from one bad foster home to the next. All he wants to do is be able to take care of his brothers (who are also in foster care) and put his family back together.

Review: Fate Succumbs (Timber Wolves #3)

Fate Succumbs (Timber Wolves Trilogy, #3)

Title: Fate Succombs
(Timber Wolves #3)

Author: Tammy Blackwell

Summary:
Having narrowly escaped an unjust death sentence, Scout Donovan is on the run. But the more she discovers about the Alpha Pack and herself, the more she realizes she can’t run forever. Destiny is propelling her towards an unavoidable battle. Can Scout survive, or will she finally succumb to fate?

Review:
Uhhh… I think Im a little speechless at the moment. As I sit here at my computer, trying to figure out HOW to say what Im feeling, I just cant think of the words!

This was an EPIC finale to the Timber Wolves series! It had everything a novel should have! Excitement and fear, worry and action, hope and truth, and romance! The story follows Scout and she and Liam are in hiding. For a large portion of this novel, it is only Liam and Scout as they make their way across the USA and Canada, training to try and find a way to overthrow the Alpha Pack.

Talley, Charlie and Jace are also present, just in small doses. Talley and Jace have a new… relationship. But it was one I expected from the very first book! And I love the direction it took.

Charlie was such a minor character in this book it almost made me sad. After Alex died, I was sure Scout and Charlie would make up, but I guess I knew after book 2, it wouldn’t happen. Still- in a very small way I was a little bummed.

HOWEVER- I really LOVED the turn of events. I loved the way Scout really grew into a woman, a strong and sure woman. I loved learning more about Liams character and being able to see him more. I loved learning more of the history of shifters and figuring out all the answers that you were left questioning after the first two books!

Review: Time Mends (Timber Wolves #2)

Time Mends (Timber Wolves Trilogy, #2)

Title: Time Mends(Timber Wolves #2)
Author: Tammy Blackwell

Summary:
After a tragic accident leaves her battered, heartbroken, and alone, Scout Donovan would rather hide in dreams than face reality. But things are changing quickly in Scout's life. Soon she's pulled back into the world of Shifters and Seers, with her best friend's fate depending on Scout's ability to protect her. Can Scout pull it together in time to save Talley, or is the past too much to overcome?
Review:
(There will be spoilers from the first book in this review- so If you haven’t read the first book- be forewarned)
SO- This story starts almost immediately where the first one stops. Scout has been injured by her brother in coyote form and attempting to recover (though it is proving difficult), Alex is dead, and now she and Charlie aren’t speaking.
She also is having dreams (that are almost too real) where she sees and speaks with Alex still, trying to keep him alive in her mind. But that’s not it… exactly one month after the horrible accident, during the next full moon, Scout also changes. Though she was not born with shifter blood, she is now turning into an arctic wolf (indicative of her albino-ish features)

Review: Destiny Binds (Timber Wolves #1)

Destiny Binds (Timber Wolves Trilogy, #1)

Title: Destiny Binds (Timber Wolves #1)
Author: Tammy Blackwell

Summary:
Scout Donovan is a girl who believes in rules, logic, and her lifelong love of Charlie Hagan. Alex Cole believes in destiny, magic, and Scout. When Alex introduces Scout to the world of Shifters, men who change into wolves or coyotes during the full moon and Seers, women who can see your most private thoughts and emotions with a mere touch, the knowledge changes everything and everyone Scout thought she knew

Review:
So I actually first read this book back before I wrote reviews, but I loved it (and the second book too) so much, that now that the 3rd book is out, I knew I should reread them both before starting the 3rd book and actually write up a review for them.

So… here goes: Scout is a normal senior, living a pretty good life. She has a step brother (her mother and his father married after they were already born and their spouses both died) who is just a few months older than she, and a half sister that their parents had together.
She also has a best friend- Talley, who is pretty awesome, and Jace’s cousin (Jace is her step brother) Charlie, who she has basically had a crush on forever but she thinks he only thinks of her as a little sister.

That’s the start up… then everything changes when Alex (and his older, creepy brother, Liam) move into town. Alex and Scout start up a relationship, though Jace and Charlie are vehemently against it (and wont tell her why) until one night she discovers their deep dark secret!

Review: Judgment (deck of lies #4)

Judgment by Jade Varden

Title: Judgment
(Deck of Lies #4)
Author: Jade Varden
(Visit her site for TONS of useful writing tips and just all around awesomeness!)

Summary:
Cashing Out

Do I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?
How can I, when the truth will destroy us all? Now that I’ve started telling lies, I can’t stop. Not until all this is over, and I’m free of the family that never felt like mine. Maybe it’s wrong. Maybe I’m a bad person.

But it’s definitely the only way I’m ever going to escape them. I have to take the opportunity, no matter how terrible it is...don’t I?

Review:
So… IT FINALLY CAME OUT! I have to say, I was SO nervous about how this series would end! I really cared about Rain and wanted her to have a good ending. Her life was ALL kinds of messed up. (not to mention, I always want the good guys to win and the bad guys to get justice) and I just really couldn’t see a way that could happen. I mean… at the end of Death… (the 3rd book) I just could NOT find a way this could end up that would make me happy.

So, this story starts out with Rain in jail, waiting until her 17th birthday, the day she would have the trial for a murder she didn’t commit. Her pseudo father is now her lawyer but his priorities do NOT lie with Rain. His loyalties are actually with the murderer… so her situation totally sucks!

The realities of jail are actually a lot harsher than portrayed in this book, but I supposed if you have millions of dollars at your fingertips than you can create a sort of safe haven in jail…? Not too sure about that.

Review: Blood and Snow #3 and #4

The Vampire Christopher (Blood and Snow, #3)Blood Soaked Promises (Blood and Snow, #4)
Titles: The Vampire Christopher
(Blood and Snow #3)

andBlood Soaked Promises (Volume 4)
Author: RaShelle Workman

Summary:
Volume 3 and 4 in the BLOOD AND SNOW series. Each volume is novelette length.

Snow White must come to terms with her bloodlust. It's one thing to drink the blood of her Hunter, something else entirely to drink the blood of a human.

EVERY THOUSAND YEARS THE VAMPIRE QUEEN SELECTS A NEW BODY, ALWAYS THE FAIREST IN THE LAND, AND THIS TIME SHE'S CHOSEN SNOW WHITE.

"Lips red as rubies.
Hair dark as night.
Drink your true love's blood.
Become the Vampire, Snow White."

Review:
So… I didn’t write a separate review for book 3 or 4. Im just going to finish this review by reviewing the 4 together as 1.
I think I would love this story. Though there are a few things that bother me, like her name, and Christophers last name. I don’t like how completely fragile she appears in the beginning and I don’t like how she is pretty (TOTALLY) immature.
But mostly I don’t like how its split up in tiny little volumes.
BUT – other than that, I love it!

Review: Revenant in Training

Revenant in Training (Blood and Snow, #2)
TITLE: Revenant in Training
(Blood and Snow Volume 2)
Author: RaShelle Workman

Summary:
Volume 2 in the BLOOD AND SNOW series. Each volume is novelette length.

Snow has become something not quite human. She must discover how to live with the changes, hopefully without killing anyone.

Become the Vampire, Snow White.

Review:

So, the second installment in the Blood and Snow series was again pretty good. I really feel like all of these volumes should be combined into an actual book. But whatever.
The writing was still solid and pretty.
The story just continued right where we stopped before. She now is a Revenant, a human on the verge of changing into a vampire. Her best friends (all boys) and their adoptive step father are now going to train her.
I guess the real problem is that there is no conflict that is resolved. In a book, you have the plot, and then some tension/conflict that builds to the climax before the story ends. That does not happen in these “books.” Instead, the story just stops, and continues in the next volume.
I really like the story so far, though there are glaringly obvious connections to Snow White… I mean, there is not any subtlety. Things are pretty cheesy at times too. But I still like it.
On to Volume 3

(I will rate all of them the same... so check back at Volume 4 to see what the rating is. Ill come back and update this though.)

Review: Blood and Snow

TITLE: Blood and Snow
(Volume 1)
Author: RaShelle Workman

Summary
:

Volume 1 in the BLOOD AND SNOW series. Each volume is novelette length.

Snow White isn't an ordinary girl. She doesn't know that yet.

Review:
I bought this book as a part of a 4 book set… except, they aren’t actually books. They are novellas… VERY short.
The writing was good and solid and started the story well. However, when I bought this, I thought it was 4 NOVELS. Don’t get me wrong, I bought all 4 for only 0.99… but still. I just didn’t realize they were not full novels.
Now- I don’t like short stories. You will hear me say this time and again. I like LONG novels, and Series, so the story just goes on and on.
Anyways, like I said, the writing was great, though cheesy at times. I like the way the story is starting, and I feel the Snow has HUGE potential to grow throughout the series. (always a plus to see a character REALLY grow)
I cant really write a full review, because it wasn’t a full novel.
SO- off to volume 2.

(I will rate all of them the same... so check back at Volume 4 to see what the rating is. Ill come back and update this though.)

Review: Beguiled by Rashelle Workman

Beguiled (Immortal Essence, #2)

Title: Beguiled
(Immortal Essence Book 2)
Author: Rachelle Workman
Summary:
Venus has become immortal, just as she always wanted. In the process she hurt Zaren, lost Michael, and destroyed her family.
At least that's what she believed.
Turns out Ramien, the god of her planets' underworld, has her parents, and Michael.
To save them, Venus makes a deal. She must complete three trials. They seem impossible. They certainly won't be easy. Worst of all, someone she loves won't make it out alive.
Review:
Once again, I was pretty impressed with this book and with Workman’s writing. I really enjoy to read her stories because she just writes so pretty! I mean, listen to the first line, “The dream was venom to my soul.”  Awesome. Here is another line, “One overwhelming emotion permeated. Terror.”
Anyways, I love her writing.

Bloggy Vacation is over! IM BACK

HEY!! Im Back!!! FINALLY!
SO true!! my life is seriously lacking when im not on here!!

So at first my bloggy vacation was because of Thanksgiving and all the millions of things I was doing. BUT then I got VERY sick!! I had a severe case on tonsillitis AND strep! And it was the worst case ever! I was in bed at least 2 full days! Then after 3 days of antibiotics (and my throat and body pain still getting worse) I went back for steroid pills too. And FINALLY today I am almost better! I mean… I am better, but not 100% yet.
