Review: Darkness Falls by Jessica Sorensen

Darkness Falls (Darkness Falls, #1)

Title: Darkness Falls (Darkness Falls #1)
Author: Jessica Sorensen

Summary:
When the disease spread through the world, people had no choice but to go into hiding. The Colony is hidden deep underground, far away from the vampires—humans that were transformed by the disease. The vampires are hideous, starving, and they will kill any human they come across.
Seventeen-year-old Kayla is a Bellator, a warrior that protects The Colony. In order to survive, there are three rules she must follow:
Rule #1—Never go out after dark.
Rule #2—Always carry a weapon.
Rule #3—No matter what, never EVER get bitten.
But what happens when the rules Kayla has always lived by can no longer apply?
The Highers run The Colony and accept nothing less than perfection. One slip up can mean death. Kayla has always worked hard to follow the rules and strive for perfection. But during a moment of weakness, she lets her imperfections show. Her punishment is worse than death. She is chosen for The Gathering and is thrown out into a world full of starving vampires.
No one has ever survived The Gathering, at least that’s what Kayla’s been told. But when she runs into a group who insist they were once part of The Gathering, Kayla discovers the Highers have been keeping secrets. Secrets that could lead to a cure.

Review:
Man! Why has it taken me so long to read this?? I read the Fallen Star series by Sorensen like… a year ago, and bought this book and the second book probably 3 months ago, but only started reading it today?? BAD decision! I should have read it months ago!!

Some things I love in my books: action, romance, paranormal aspect, dystopian aspect, great characters, suspense… this book has it ALL! It was amazing!

So, the story is about a girl, Kayla, who lives in the future, where everything has changed. There are basically 3 kinds of vampires that were created due to a virus alive,  and then the few humans that are left. The humans live in The Colony, where the Highers (a form of vampire, just not the blood thirsty kind) are in charge and rule every single thing of your life. On the outside are the bad vampires, that are blood thirsty, and crazy and kinda like zombies. And then, there are the half breeds, that are a form of vampire, but not crazy zombiefied, still strong and dead though.

And so Kayla gets thrown out for dead in this thing called the Gathering (which I still don’t fully understand) and she runs into the other humans. But see, the Highers and the Doctors in the Colony have WAY too many secrets and it felt like you learned a new secret on every freakin page. So many twists and turns, and still there is so much to learn.

Because, one thing the Highers did, was erase memories. So, you don’t really know everything you know. (if that makes any sense) and Kayla spends almost the whole book trying to remember. Because Kayla is even more special than the others. She is the only human alive that the vampires (the crazy zombie ones) wont bite and infect.

And really, I feel like there was so much more happening in this book, but its just too much to say without spoiling everything!

Just like with all Sorensens book, there character development was great, the plot fantastic and the writing was smooth and easy.

The only things I didn’t like were: 1. I hated that everyone kept lying the whole time. And 2. So many questions remained unanswered. You would be given 5 questions, and then with every 1 answer, get 5 more. So, it was pretty frustrating at some point. But that didn’t stop me from reading it, it actually made me want to read more in a really twisted way.

Thankfully, I have book two, so Im gonna start reading it right now!!!

If you haven’t read this book yet, you should! I recommend to ANY person that enjoys anything paranormal, romantic, suspenseful, or YA!

  3. Ah, the katana. Is there any time where it doesn't make things cooler? Though to be fair, I've always been a halberd man. Long-range thrusts and slashes? That's some versatility.

Anyway...so there are three types of vampire in the book? Intriguing. Most intriguing. I suspect that most stories would be resting on their laurels after coming up with just one type, but now that I think about it, multiple types would have their advantages. Race relations, for one thing, and loyalty for another.

Well, in any case, thanks for the review. I don't usually judge books by their cover, but I'm willing to assume that several vampires get slashed over the course of the tale.

It's the only way I'll sleep tonight.

  4. Well, this sounds interesting. LOVE the cover and the idea sounds a little familiar, in the Gathering and so. But I am still going to try this sometime.
    LOVED your review, Mrs. Jones
